Practice room
The trainer I use while the permit is on its way. A timed session is one continuous transmission, groups of five with real word spaces, typed along without Enter, and a report at the bell. A new character opens at ninety percent. Character speed from 12 to 80 wpm.
The station
A compact 100-watt HF-to-UHF station in the hills west of San José, built for daily DX on 40, 20, 15 and 10 metres and for taking the same rig into the national parks.
Transceiver
FTX-1 Field head with the SPA-1 amplifier and built-in tuner. Detaches into a 6-watt battery portable.
Home antenna · roof
Motor-tuned vertical on the parapet, eight resonant wire radials for 40 to 10 metres, tuned from the radio in seconds.
Field antenna · parks
Ground-spike quarter-wave with a 5.6 m telescopic whip. Resonant by length, no tuner needed. Same antenna on the office roof tripod.
QSL
